Water Quality, Health and Water Treatment

Partnering Organization(s): Coastal Salinity Prevention Cell (CSPC), Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT)

Brief Description: CAREWATER is building a program on water quality and health with support from CSPC and SDTT. Within these programs, we are developing research projects linking water quality and health in coastal areas; a training program for health workers in Fluoride and Iron affected areas; action-research projects on drinking water treatment.

Drinking Water in Khambat Taluka

Partnering Organization(s): Water and Sanitation Management Organization (WASMO),  Foundation for Ecological Security (FES)

Brief Description:  An action-research project aimed at developing local solutions to the drinking water problem in the coastal Khambat area of Anand district in Gujarat. CAREWATER has been recognized as part of a network of organizations together working for solving these drinking water problems all along the coastal stretch of Gujarat.

Forest Water Interactions

Partnering Organization(s): Foundation for Ecological Security (FES)

Brief Description

Forest form an important link in the hydrologic cycle. They are both consumers and providers of water services. This project aims to build a picture of the role of forests in maintaining the hydrologic cycle in different parts of India. This work will carry on into actionable projects that will both expand current knowledge and help in building awareness about these issues.

Local knowledge in Groundwater Hydrology

Partnering Organization(s): IWMI-Tata Water Policy Programme (ITP)

Brief Description:

Currently information on groundwater rests primarily with data collected by government agencies. Such data is often difficult to obtain, sparsely collected and possibly of poor quality. However, there is considerable amount of information that rests locally especially in professionals who deal with drilling wells. Local well drillers are a precious source of information about groundwater. This work attempts to explore this local source of well driller information towards creating local database that can be then used for local management of groundwater.

Impact of Water Saving Technologies

Partnering Organization(s): North Gujarat Initiative (NGI)

Brief Description:

In severely water starved areas such as northern Gujarat, farmers are now slowly adopting water saving technologies for irrigation. Apart from water saving, these technologies are also leading to increased incomes since there is also a shift in cropping as well as on-farm water management. This work will look at these benefits to farmers from switching to water saving technologies and how that can be used to promote their adoption on a larger scale

Multi-disciplinary Groundwater Education

Partnering Organization(s): International Water Management Institute (IWMI)

Brief Description: This is an innovative multi-disciplinary groundwater training programme aimed at producing cadres of trained professionals who can grasp the various nuances of managing groundwater. The participants experience a traveling field and classroom course of 4 weeks after which an on-field research of 8 weeks gives them practical knowledge of the tools taught.

Multi-location Water Policy Studies

Partnering Organization(s): project specific partners

Brief Description: CAREWATER has innovated a unique manner of working with 15 partners in different locations across India to conduct multi-located water policy studies. Currently 3 such studies are in progress.  The objective of these studies are to apply current research to national-level policy making.
